Alliance of Artists Communities announces recipients of the
2010 Visions from the New California Awards
August 18, 2009 – The Alliance of Artists Communities recently named visual artists Iris
Charabi-Berggren, Ala Ebtekar, Prajakti Jayavant, Rebecca Lowry, Ethan Turpin,
and Meeson Pae Yang as the 2010 recipients of the Visions from the New California
award.
A collaborative initiative of six California artists’ residency programs, funded by The
James Irvine Foundation, the award supports highly talented, yet under-recognized,
California visual artists who represent the new California demographic. The Alliance of
Artists Communities, the nation’s only service organization for artists’ communities and
residency programs, administers and directs the Visions from the New California project.
Selected from a pool of over 300 visual artists state-wide, the six award recipients will each
receive a one-month residency at one of the participating California programs next year,
and a $4000 unrestricted stipend. The artists and their work will also be featured in a
widely distributed publication documenting their residency experiences at the host
programs, and will be invited to participate in a group exhibition, featuring the work of a
number of Visions artists, at a later date.
Artists’ residency programs support working artists of all disciplines by providing them
with both time and space to create new work, and with opportunities for interaction and
collaboration with artistic peers and mentors.
The Visions from the New California project recognizes and supports six California visual
artists each year. The 2010 award recipients with their host residency programs are:
Iris Charabi-Berggren, Interdisciplinary Art, from San Francisco – Headlands
Center for the Arts in Sausalito
Ala Ebtekar, Painting, from Berkeley – 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica

Rebecca Lowry, Conceptual Art, from Los Angeles – Montalvo Arts Center in
Saratoga
Ethan Turpin, Mixed Media, from Santa Barbara – Kala Art Institute in Berkeley
Meeson Pae Yang, Installation Art, from Torrance – Exploratorium in San
Francisco
A record number of applicants this year submitted work samples which were reviewed by a
prestigious panel including: Kevin B. Chen, program director at Intersection for the Arts
in San Francisco; Meg Shiffler, gallery director at the San Francisco Arts Commission
Gallery; and Lava Thomas, an accomplished visual artist with studios in San Francisco
and Los Angeles.
The James Irvine Foundation is a private, nonprofit grantmaking foundation dedicated to
expanding opportunities for the people of California to participate in a vibrant, inclusive,
and successful society. The Foundation’s grantmaking is organized around three program
areas: Arts, Youth, and California Perspectives, which focuses on increasing public
understanding of critical issues facing the state. Since 1937, the Foundation has provided
over $1 billion in grants to more than 3000 nonprofit organizations throughout California.
For more information about The James Irvine Foundation, please visit their website at
www.irvine.org or call 415.777.2244.
Based in Providence, Rhode Island, the Alliance of Artists Communities is the only
national network of artists’ communities, colonies and residency programs, with more than
250 members worldwide. The Alliance contributes to the nation’s cultural vitality by giving
a collective voice to artists’ communities, promoting successful practices in the field, and
advocating for creative environments that support the work of today’s artists. The Alliance
represents programs that support artists in all disciplines, believing that collaboration and
exchange that cross traditional boundaries furthers our culture’s progress. For more

Orly Cogan's Museum Show Schedule for 2009
Orly Cogan will be participating in the following museum exhibitions this year:
1. Exhibition title: "She Will Always Be Younger Than Us"
Textile Museum of Canada. On view now through September 7th 2009.
2. Exhibition Title: "It’s Not Us, It’s You"
The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art.
This show will be on view through the end of June. It’s Not Us, It’s You is an exhibition that explores the inevitability of rejection in our lives – a timely topic in today’s woeful economic climate. Through a tragic and sometimes heartbreaking lens, the artists in this exhibition respond to the reality of rejection with subversion, self-reflection, humor and brutal honesty.
3. Exhibition Title: "Pretty Tough: Contemporary Storytelling". At The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in CT. June 21, 2009, to January 3, 2010
The women in this exhibition, although formally distinct, all reclaim storytelling as a strategy to address contemporary discourses on warfare, the environment, and female struggles. The artists focus on narrative representation and figuration. Their fairytale-like depictions are in reality reflections on submerged violence, played out through refined, delicate, and meticulous work. The artists look back at traditional modes of expression, such as storytelling, as well as engaging traditional or vintage techniques that require a labor—intensive process—obsessive, elaborate, yet impeccable manufacture. This highly stylized work—pretty—offers profound assessments of our contemporary world—tough—by relying on storytelling as a subversive strategy that permeates the public sphere more efficiently than confrontational discourses.
4. Exhibition Title: "I Want Candy"
The Fresno Metropolitan Museum from June 26th - September 6th 09.
This installation will be traveling to various Museum exhibitions through out the US for one year following this show in Fresno.

Steve Lambert's Self-Control Internet Gets Big Attention
Artist Steve Lambert has created an internet sensation in his new Self-Control Firefox application. The app prevents access to either email, facebook, twitter, etc based on user stipulation - for a user-defined amount of time. The hook is that if you change your mind, too bad! You must wait until the stipulated time expires. Rebooting or Shutting Down will not change anything. During the shutdown period the web remains otherwise accessible. Help for web and email junkies is here now - thanks to Steve...
